Nutrient load reductions

  • Total sediment removed = 25,955 tons
  • Annual sediment reduction = 109 tons
  • Total stream length restored = 3,000 ft restored

Sediment load reductions

  • Total P removed from ecosystem = 50,498 lbs
  • Total Sorbed P removed from ecosystem = 35,128 lbs*
  • Annual P load reduction = 250 lbs
  • Annual Sorbed P load reduction = 174 lbs*

Scaling up

  • 797 miles of stream in Lancaster conducive to BSR-type restorations
  • 100 tons of sediment could be reduced annually
  • 3000 ft of stream length already restored

Expectations

  • In 4 - 7 years targeted BSR-type restorations in Lancaster County alone would meet the PA State phosphorus and sediment load reduction goals for 2025
  • Reductions in Nitrogen (NO3) are expected to come with wetland ecosystem development

Note: to meet the TMDL requirements, TP (total sorbed P) must be reduced by 1 million pounds by 2025
*Sorbed P refers to phosphorus that is loosely bound to particle surfaces, which my be released into solution under reducing conditions
